What is soap?
Soap is one byproduct from a chemical reaction between the fatty acids in fats and/or oils (animal or vegetable) and the caustic agent, sodium hydroxide (lye). The caustic agent busts up the fatty acids and the molecules recombine to produce the soap and glycerin along with a lot of heat and some water. This chemical reaction is called saponification.
Handmade soaps retain their glycerin, a natural humectant that draws moisture to the skin. Glycerin is removed from commercial soaps and sold separately as a by-product.
